HANZI
CHINESE INSTRUCTIONAL SOFTWARE
by OCTAGON INTERNATIONAL
INSTALLATION:
The program is ready to run. Simply type: START at the C> prompt.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
The program was designed to run on IBM compatible machines using
a VGA, EGA or Hercules graphics adapter, MS-DOS 3.3 or higher, and 640K
RAM. The graphics resolution must be at least 640 X 350. This includes all
VGA and Hercules graphics adapters, most EGA adapters, and many CGA
adapters. While a hard drive is recommended, the program can be run from
one 3 1/2 inch floppy disk, or two 5 1/4 inch floppy disks (one disk drive).
OBJECTIVES:
This program was created to aid students in the study of Chinese
characters. Students, through the use of this program, will be better able
to read and write Chinese characters.
MAIN MENU:
The program presents information arranged by chapter
corresponding to the chapters in the Practical Chinese Reader, Book 1, for
a total of thirty chapters. THIS DEMONSTRATION VERSION CONTAINS ONLY
FOUR CHAPTERS. Each chapter presents a set of characters to be learned.
The chapter to be studied can be selected by pressing 1 and then entering
the desired chapter number.
Each lesson is divided into three sections. The first section teaches
the student how to draw the characters introduced in the chapter by
drawing each character in the proper stroke order on the screen. Strokes
are drawn in the correct sequence, and in the appropriate direction. In
addition, the pinyin for the character is presented as well as the meaning
of the character. The stroke count is updated as the character is drawn.
The student can control the speed at which each character is drawn by
using the up and down arrows, as well as pause the drawing process at any
time. The student can use the SPACEBAR to pause, or press ENTER to
proceed to the next character, or press ESC to return to the main menu.
The second part of each lesson tests the student's knowledge of the
pronunciation and meaning of various characters and phrases introduced
in the chapter. This is done through the use of five different kinds of
quizzes. Each quiz contains ten questions selected at random from the
currently studied chapter or, if the student wishes, from all chapters up
to and including the current chapter.
Each quiz is presented as a set of ten questions.
After each set, the program returns to the main menu.
Quiz One:
This quiz tests the student's knowledge of pinyin by presenting
characters one at a time, and instructing the student to type the
pinyin for the character. Pinyin should be typed using letters, the
colon (:) for umlaut, and numbers for tones (i.e. nu:3 - female). No
tone is represented by the number 5. If the student is correct, the
character dui4 (correct) is displayed. If the student is incorrect, the
characters bu4 dui4 (not correct) are displayed, as well as the correct
pronunciation or pronunciations for the character. As with all of the
quizzes, the student's running total of correctly answered questions
is kept in the lower left hand corner.
Quiz Two:
This quiz tests the student's knowledge of the meaning of various
characters and phrases, by presenting characters and phrases with
a selection of possible English translations. The student is instructed
to select the number of the correct translation for the character or
phrase. After evaluating the student's answer, the computer displays
the correct answer.
Quiz Three:
This quiz tests the student's knowledge of the meaning of characters
and phrases, by presenting English words and phrases with a
selection of possible Chinese translations. The student is instructed
to select the number of the correct Chinese translation for the phrase.
After evaluation, the computer displays the correct answer.
Quiz Four:
This quiz tests the student's knowledge of pinyin, and of the meaning
of phrases, by presenting phrases with one or two characters missing
and the appropriate English meaning which is to be achieved. The
student is instructed to fill in the blanks using pinyin to access a
menu of characters. From the menu, the student presses the number
of the correct character. if there is only one character in the menu,
press 1. After evaluation, the computer fills in the blanks correctly.
Quiz Five:
This quiz tests the student's knowledge of the meaning of characters
and phrases, by presenting English words and phrases with a
variation of one single Chinese phrase repeated seven times. The
Chinese phrase is completely correct in only one instance, however.
The student is instructed to select the number of the correct Chinese
phrase. After evaluation, the computer displays the correct answer.
After each quiz of ten questions, the computer responds with different
Ancient Chinese Idioms based on the student's score.
The third part of each lesson consists of two sets of automatic "flashcards".
The first set consists of characters chosen at random from all chapters up
to and including the current chapter being studied. The computer will
show the character, pause a moment, and then show the pinyin for that
character.
The second set consists of characters, words, and short phrases chosen at
random from all chapters up to and including the current chapter being
studied. The computer will show the character, word, or phrase, pause a
moment, and then show the English translation for that character, word, or
phrase. The SPACEBAR can be used to pause the process, while the ESC
key returns you to the main menu.
